Submission Guidelines for Writers
Flipside Movie Emporium focuses on new movies and DVDs, but we also cover micro-budget indies and other films from the fringes. If you're interested in covering theatrical releases, you're more likely to be accepted if you already have access to advance screenings, since we like to publish reviews by release date. Your introductory submission packet should include: 1. A short cover letter detailing (a) your location, (b) your background in film and criticism, (c) what kind of films you expect to focus on, and (d) how many reviews you expect to contribute per month. Experience isn't necessary: we simply want great writers who are knowledgeable and passionate about movies. 2. Three sample reviews of 400 to 800 words each. 3. Just for fun, a top-10 list of your favorite films of all time. So what's in it for you if you're accepted? We pay $10 per review or article. Preferred length is 600 to 800 words, but we'll also take 300- to 900-word reviews and, occasionally, longer essays and articles. We buy first-time Internet rights, online exclusivity for a year, and the right to archive online indefinitely. You retain copyright and receive a byline and bio page. Payments are made quarterly (within 30 days after the end of each quarter) via either PayPal or check, whatever you prefer. In addition to the meager pay and exposure to Flipside Movie Emporium's ever-growing legion of readers, your reviews will be indexed in mega-popular film sites like The Internet Movie Database, Movie Review Query Engine, and Rotten Tomatoes. Keep in mind that we're insanely selective. Please send your sample reviews and cover letter as e-mail attachments (either Microsoft Word documents or Real Text Format will do). Got your stuff ready? E-mail it to:
